levator operculi

levator operculi
a muscle just posterior to the dilator operculi originating from the dermal pterotic bone and inserting to the dorsal medial surface of the operculum. It functions to rotate the operculum dorsally and caudally. This rotation is translated to other elements in the opercular series and then to the mandible by the interopercular-mandibular ligament. The caudal pull on the ligament depresses the mandible and opens the jaws
